One Clap Speech and Debate is thrilled to present: "Izzy's Activist's Guide to the Clapocalypse, Part 2 - Performing Advocacy."

Hi there, Campers! We're back with part two of Cheyenne South Coach Izzy Garcia's excellent series!

Today, Izzy takes listeners on a profound journey through the ethical landscape of performative advocacy in speech and debate. Izzy focuses on the delicate balance between impactful storytelling and the potential harm of reliving trauma on stage.

Izzy begins with an exploration of how ethical storytelling can be maintained without compromising the authenticity and well-being of the performer. Izzy highlights the double-edged sword of advocacy in performance, noting that while telling these important stories is crucial, it can also be damaging when performers are required to relive their traumas repeatedly for the sake of a win. NSDA Original Oratory finalist, Solemei Scamaroni's research is particularly illuminating, revealing that 61% of performers feel pressured to choose traumatic pieces, which often leads to emotional harm and a sense of commodification of their personal experiences.

In contrast, the episode also showcases the positive side of performative advocacy through the experiences of Jade Ismail, the 2022 POI National Champion. Jade's performance on trans identity not only brought her success but also peace and healing, illustrating that when done authentically, performative advocacy can be positive and empowering. This dual perspective encourages us to critically evaluate our motivations and methods in storytelling, emphasizing that the impact of a story should never come at the cost of the performer's mental health.

One of the most poignant discussions in the episode focuses on the concept of "shock value" performances. Izzy shares his personal encounters with performances (including some of his own past performances) that relied heavily on shocking content to make an impact, often to the detriment of genuine advocacy.

Izzy also reflects on the responsibility of coaches and mentors in guiding performers towards ethical storytelling. He emphasizes the need for introspection, urging both coaches and performers to ask themselves why they are choosing a particular piece and whether it serves a greater purpose beyond personal or competitive gain. This self-reflection is crucial in preventing the commodification of trauma and ensuring that stories are told with the respect and sensitivity they deserve.

This episode of Camp One Clap is a must-listen for anyone involved in speech and debate, as it tackles the complex interplay between ethical storytelling and performative advocacy with depth and sensitivity.

Thank you to Izzy for sharing his wisdom and insights about advocacy in Speech! Don't miss his last episode next week!
