Camp One Clap 2, Episode 11: Bailey Patterson and Marcus Viney Present - Chronicles from the Crypt, pt. 1

Day 11 of the Clapocalypse brings a new spooky series to Camp One Clap! Bailey Patterson and Marcus Viney have been digging through the catacombs of successful NSDA performances and speeches. They've uncovered four terrific pieces that terrify and thrill audiences, and they shall bring these forward for discussion, analysis, and learning in their series: Chronicles from the Crypt!

Hi there, Campers! Your crypt-keepers have arrived!

Marcus Viney and Bailey Patterson playfully kick off their entertaining and insightful first episode of Chronicles from the Crypt. The duo present an in-depth analysis of two standout NSDA performances. The first is Salome Scamaroni’s 2024 Original Oratory, "If it Bleeds, it Leads," a compelling critique of society's fixation on traumatic stories. Scamaroni's performance is particularly noteworthy for her powerful message and the piece's ability to spark meaningful discussions about the ethics of storytelling in Speech and Debate. Marcus and Bailey highlight the importance of topic selection, delivery, and presenting solutions in Original Oratory. They emphasize that a compelling topic often addresses a problem that is right under our noses, making the audience think, "Why didn't I think of that?"

The second performance that is brought under examination in the episode is the 2019 Championship Duo performance of "Donnie Darko" by Kyle and Kevin Ahern. This performance stands out for its originality and creative adaptation of the cult classic film. Marcus and Bailey discuss the importance of piece selection, exceptional use of blocking, and the principle of "show don't tell" in duo interpretation. They praise the duo's innovative approach to storytelling, particularly their use of near silence during the climax of their performance, which enhances the emotional impact.

Thank you to our crypt-keepers, Marcus and Bailey for their entertaining and helpful first episode of Chronicles from the Crypt! We look forward to episode two, which will debut next week at Camp One Clap!
