Camp One Clap 2, Episode 13: Natalyia Kopack on Flexibility, Courage, and Gender Bias in Debate

Hey, Campers! Spooky day 13 of the Clapocalypse is frightening indeed... but at Camp One Clap Natalyia Kopack is here to help!  Natalyia, a member of the Cheyenne East Speech and Debate Team, debuts at camp to talk about the exciting joys of trying new events and the vital importance of equality in Speech and Debate!

Hi there, Campers! Natalyia Kopack has arrived at the Clapocalypse!

In today's episode of the One Clap Speech and Debate podcast, Natalyia Kopack, a rising junior from Cheyenne East High School, is here to share her tale of competitive success but also personal growth, resilience, and overcoming systemic challenges.

Natalyia discusses her willingness to experiment with new events which has not only reduced her stress but also significantly increased her enjoyment of Speech and Debate. She sheds light on the importance of flexibility and personal fulfillment in debate, particularly for those new to the activity or considering a switch in formats.

One of the key themes that Natalyia discusses is the gender bias that female debaters often face - an issue that she wrote about in an article published by Equality in Forensics earlier this year (linked below). Natalyia candidly discusses the higher standards and judge biases that create additional pressures for women in debate. The discussion reveals how these systemic issues can make the debate community feel like an exclusive boys' club, discouraging female participation and retention. Natalyia shares her personal experiences, highlighting the discouragement and bullying that can result from unfair judging and peer behavior.

Natalyia also explores the broader Speech and Debate community, emphasizing the role of coaches and mentors in fostering respectful behavior and equitable environments. Natalyia's story highlights the power of community and the vital role that supportive figures play in helping students navigate the challenges of competitive Speech and Debate. The discussion extends to potential solutions for addressing gender bias and promoting inclusivity, including the implementation of zero-tolerance policies for harmful behavior and the importance of open communication.

This episode is not just about the challenges and triumphs of one debater but also a broader commentary on the importance of resilience and personal growth in competitive speech. Natalyia's story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all debaters, particularly those facing similar challenges.
