Camp One Clap 2, Episode 15: Alexis Worthen on Horror Films, Debate, and Model UN

Hey, Campers!  It’s about that time!  Time for a new day (day 15, in fact) in the lovely wasteland that is the terrifying Clapocalypse!  Aren’t you glad you’ve safely arrived at Camp One Clap?  Joining us today is Camp One Clap alum Alexis Worthen here to discuss the merits of the horror genre in film, competing in the college level Model United Nations, and more!

Hi there, Campers! Alexis Worthen is back to help us find our way in the horrors of the Clapocalypse!

Today on the One Clap Speech and Debate podcast, we have the pleasure of welcoming back Alexis Worthen, an academic All-American and quad ruby debater. Alexis, who has transitioned from Wyoming debate star to a Political Science student at Simmons University, brings a wealth of experiences and insights. Alexis provides insight in her Forensics journey through the realms of debate, talks about her love for horror films, and unveils her aspirations in public policy.

We begin the episode with a whimsical yet thought-provoking discussion on survival skills in a post-apocalyptic world. Alexis humorously admits her limited survival abilities, especially if she finds herself away from the familiar terrain of Wyoming. Her candor and humor set the tone for a conversation that is both engaging and reflective. As we navigate through her high school debate career, Alexis shares her experiences in public forum, extemp, and congressional debate. Her current involvement in Model UN at Simmons University showcases her continuous passion for debate and public speaking.

The episode then transitions to a deep dive into Alexis's love for the horror genre. She discusses the TV series "The Last of Us" and its profound reflections on humanity. The conversation highlights how horror films, despite their eerie and often terrifying content, can provide valuable insights into human emotions and societal issues. Alexis particularly appreciates the emotional depth of Ari Aster's films, "Hereditary" and "Midsommar," which explore themes of denial, grief, and mental health. The discussion also touches on the unique style of A24 films, known for their thought-provoking and visually compelling narratives.

In "Hereditary," Aster dives into the complexities of familial relationships and inherited trauma. The film's raw portrayal of grief and loss resonates deeply with viewers, making it a standout in the horror genre. "Midsommar," on the other hand, uses the backdrop of a Swedish cult to explore the dynamics of romantic relationships and the impact of emotional isolation. The film's vibrant cinematography and unsettling narrative create a unique viewing experience that is both disturbing and captivating.

Later in the conversation, Alexis highlights how Forensics activities foster research skills, confidence, and lifelong friendships. She reflects on her transition to Model UN and how it complements her interest in political science and public policy. The collaborative and diplomatic nature of Model UN provides a different but equally valuable platform for honing public speaking and negotiation skills. Alexis's aspirations in political science and public policy are deeply rooted in her debate experiences. She shares her passion for education and public service, emphasizing the role of debate in shaping her career path.

Thank you so much to Alexis for coming back to Camp One Clap and sharing reflections on film, debate, and the future!
