Camp One Clap 2, Episode 7: Chilling Tales and Balancing Acts with Josh Thompson - 2023 Expository National Champion

Day 7 of the Clapocalypse is upon us, and Josh Thompson - Cheyenne East alum and 2023 Expository National Champion is back to camp for a chat! Josh checks in at Camp One Clap with some spooky stories and great advice for Speech and Debate competitors who might be feeling overwhelmed.

Hi there, Campers! Never fear, Josh Thompson is here!

This episode is a rollercoaster ride, blending spine-tingling spooky stories with insightful discussions on balancing life’s demands, conquering fears, and finding personal growth through public speaking. Whether you are a speech enthusiast, a horror aficionado, or someone struggling with overcommitment, this episode has something for everyone.

Josh kicks off the episode with a discussion about his favorite spooky stories. He jumps into the atmospheric horror of "The Shining" and the psychological impact of "Midsommar." These movies aren't just frightening; they also offer stunning visuals and deep, thought-provoking narratives. Josh’s take on these films provides a blend of chills and chuckles, setting the tone for the rest of the episode. He even evaluates his survival odds in various apocalyptic scenarios, revealing a humorous yet candid look at his own survival skills and kind-hearted nature.

Balancing a packed schedule is something many of us struggle with, and Josh is no exception. He shares his own experiences of juggling multiple commitments, from speech and choir to jazz and the pressures of senior year. His journey through burnout is both relatable and enlightening. Josh emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries, prioritizing mental health, and understanding that true worth isn't measured by the number of activities one engages in but by the passion and dedication poured into them. These insights are golden for anyone feeling the weight of overcommitment, especially students and young professionals.

Public speaking is often cited as one of the most common fears, but Josh’s stories of overcoming stage fright are truly inspiring. He recounts moments of forgetting lines and dealing with unresponsive audiences, turning these potentially discouraging experiences into opportunities for growth. Josh highlights the transformative power of speech and debate, not just as a skill but as a journey of self-discovery and empathy. His personal anecdotes and reflections offer valuable lessons on perseverance and the importance of supporting one another in the speech community.

This episode of the One Clap Speech and Debate podcast is not just about spooky stories or the technicalities of public speaking; it's about the human experience, the challenges we face, and the growth we achieve. Josh Thompson’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, kindness, and dedication. Whether you are a seasoned public speaker or someone just starting, this episode offers valuable lessons and a touch of spooky fun to keep you engaged.

Thank you to Josh for coming back to Camp One Clap and sharing so many valuable thoughts and so much great advice with us!
