We’re surviving deep into the Clapocalypse here at Camp One Clap! Here on day nine, we’ve been visited by Lindsey Walker, Lizzy Arcarese, and Lydia Maurhoff - a trio of talented (and hilarious) 1A/2A Champion Big Horn Speech and Debate Team competitors who are here to share advice and inspiration for overcoming fears in performance.
Hi there, Campers! We've got a trio of talent from Big Horn here at Camp today!
Today, we dive into the exciting and sometimes nerve-wracking world of high school speech and debate with three extraordinary members of the Bighorn High School Speech Team: Lindsey Walker, Lizzy Arcarese, and Lydia Maurhoff. This episode is a full of personal stories, wacky energy, humorous anecdotes, and invaluable insights into the challenges and triumphs of competitive speaking.
One of the most compelling parts of this interview is the discussion about overcoming fears. Public speaking is a common phobia, and for high school students, the stakes can feel even higher. Lindsey, Lizzy, and Lydia each share their unique experiences with stage fright and how they've managed to conquer it.
The Big Horn trio doesn't shy away from discussing the emotional and psychological aspects of competitive speaking. From favorite (or not-so-favorite - ahem, congress) events like oratory, extemp, drama, and duo, to the playful superstitions surrounding theater and the paranormal, the interview is absolutely good vibes. Lydia Maurhoff Camp Bio:
Lydia Maurhoff is an upcoming senior on the Big Horn High School speech and debate team, and her main speech events are duo and humor. She can’t wait to bring some fun into the speech world and share some secrets of how to overcome challenges that come with the stress of speech!! She is so excited to join as a Camp One Clap counselor and hopes you’ll take a listen!!
Lindsey Walker Camp Bio:
Lindsey Walker is an upcoming senior on the Big Horn High School Speech and Debate team. She is a 2a State Champion for Oratory and a 2x 2a State Champion. While her main event is Oratory, she has also competed in Extemp, Impromptu, and Congress. She took the jump from athletics to Speech and Debate her sophomore year and couldn’t be more satisfied with her decision! She is so excited to be a Camp One Clap Counselor and use her experiences from different activities to help you appeal to a larger audience!
Lizzy Arcarese Camp Bio:
Lizzy Arcarese has been apart of speech and debate for three years at Big Horn High School. Her main events are Duo and Drama interpretation. In 2023 she qualified and competed in drama interpretation for the National Speech and Debate Tournament. She has also helped her team to two state championship titles in 2023 & 2024. She is going into her senior year and excited to compete in her last year and giving her all. Lizzy is thrilled to have this opportunity as a camp counselor at Camp One Clap, and talk all about fear with two of her best friends!
